Maui firefighters rescued a 40-year-old Lahaina man whose kayak was set adrift by strong wind off Olowalu on Saturday.
The emergency call at 4:46 p.m. indicated that a kayak had overturned and that two people were in the water about a half-mile from shore.
Firefighters arrived to find that one of the people, a 40-year-old female visitor, had swum back to shore on her own. The man was still on the kayak, which was being blown farther out to sea by 20- to 25-mph wind.
A Maui Fire Department crew from Lahaina used a rescue boat to reach the kayak about a mile offshore.
The firefighters treated the man with oxygen and brought him back to shore, where he was evaluated by paramedics before being released.
Suspect charged in alleged attack on homeless man
A Pahoa man was charged Friday with two misdemeanor counts of assault in an allegedly unprovoked attack on a homeless, disabled man.
Christopher Mohrlang, 35, was released from custody after posting $1,000 bail.
On June 7 at about 1 a.m., police said, Mohrlang assaulted John Hartley, 57, who has no permanent address.
Hartley said he’d been sleeping in front of the Pahoa Village Museum when Mohrlang poured ice water on him, sprayed Mace in his face and punched him in the head. Hartley, who is missing part of his right leg and uses a wheelchair, said the assault left him with blurred vision for days.
