Hawaiian Telcom crews have been working since Saturday to repair a 2,100-pair cable, causing at least 145 customers to lose service in parts of Makiki and Ala Moana.
Company spokeswoman Ann Nishida Fry said the company has received 145 confirmed reports of landline telephone and internet service outages.
Recent rains caused damage to the underground cable, she said.
She said the reason why it has taken so long is that each of the 2,100 pairs of cable need to be spliced on both ends, taking 8,400 splices. The work is done by two workers inside a manhole near Beretania and Punchbowl streets, requiring the work to be done at night and on the weekend to avoid creating traffic problems.
Nishida Fry would not speculate on when the repairs will be completed.
