Hawaii’s John John Florence won his fifth-round heat at the Fiji Pro on Wednesday in Namotu, Tavarua, Fiji, advancing to today’s quarterfinals.
In his Round 4 heat, Florence finished second to Australia’s Matt Wilkinson to lose out on the automatic bid to the quarterfinals. Also failing to advance in the fourth round was Hawaii’s Dusty Payne, who finished second to Brazil’s Gabriel Medina.
Surfing in the fifth round for the right to advance to the quarterfinals, Florence posted the highest score of the round with a 17.00 to eliminate Brazil’s Jadson Andre. Payne faced off with Brazil’s Adriano de Souza, but fell just short, losing 11.34 to 10.37.
In the quarterfinals, Florence again will face Wilkinson, the lowest scorer of the four automatic qualifiers.
