A panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the convictions for distributing marijuana as a sacrament of their church, the Hawaii Cannabis Ministry. It found that government has a compelling interest in lessening the risk of the marijuana circulating to nonreligious users.
Meanwhile, much has changed in six years. Hawaii is about to launch its medical marijuana dispensaries. When it comes to marijuana usage and laws, things will surely get a whole lot hazier.
Cheers to UH basketball — and the bottom line
One of the many good things about the University of Hawaii having arguably the best men’s basketball season in the school’s history is a lower budget deficit for the UH athletics program. Instead of the $4.5 million-$4.8 million deficit the Board of Regents had been told to expect, athletic director David Matlin said Tuesday the revised figure is projected to be $3.8 million-$4 million. Men’s basketball revenue was higher than projected. Let’s just hope football revenue will follow suit.
