The Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association received an $8,000 Ahahui Grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs last week in support of the 2016 HCRA State Championship Regatta, scheduled for Aug. 6 at Keehi Lagoon.
The state regatta, for which OHA serves as a sustaining partner, is free and open to the public, with races expected to run from 8 a.m. to sunset. The HCRA will crown individual champions in 41 events and club winners in four divisions.
The HCRA regatta represents the culmination of a busy summer season, as nearly 10,000 paddlers compete throughout Hawaii’s four counties and vie to represent the six different island associations with the ultimate goal of claiming state gold.
