Hawaii County police are investigating an officer-involved fatal shooting of a man in Hilo on Monday afternoon.
Police said they got a call at about 4:20 p.m. for a disturbance at a West Kawailani Street home. A responding officer found a man wielding a knife. Police said a pit bull that had chased paramedics into their vehicle was also present.
The officer fired several shots, killing the man and the pit bull, police said in a news release.
Police are conducting both a criminal investigation into the shooting and an administrative investigation.
Kahuku man arrested in Sandy Beach fight
A 21-year-old Kahuku man is in custody after he allegedly fired a gun into the air during a fight at Sandy Beach on Sunday night.
Police said the fight occurred just before 6 p.m. between two groups of men.
A 23-year-old man who wasn’t part of the dispute tried to break up the fight, police said.
The suspect allegedly threatened the man, fired the gun and fled. He was later caught on Kalanianaole Highway.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening, reckless endangering, first-degree theft, a drug violation and two firearm violations.
Motorcyclist hospitalized after H-1 crash
A 26-year-old Wahiawa man was in critical condition at the Queen’s Medical Center after the motorcycle he was driving rear-ended a car on the H-1 freeway near the Kinau Street offramp on Sunday night, police said.
Police said the motorcyclist was traveling east and tried to switch lanes, hitting the rear of a 2011 Mitsubishi sedan. The motorcycle then collided with a silver 2015 Corolla, and the motorcyclist was thrown to the ground at about 6:15 p.m., police said.
He was treated by paramedics and taken in critical condition to the hospital.
