Protesters speak out against Kaupulehu Marine Reserve plan

KAILUA-KONA >> A marine reserve at Kaupulehu Bay is near reality, prompting protest over a 10-year moratorium on fishing that is tied to the plan.

West Hawaii Today reports there were about 40 people along Queen Kaahumanu Highway on Saturday holding signs, one of which read, “This is our ice box, not a playground for the rich.”

Supporters say the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai and Queen Kaahumanu Highway opened access and led to the exploitation of reef in the area.

Land and natural resources officials recently approved establishing the marine reserve, and the governor needs to sign off.

A subsistence plan for 3.6 miles of the coastline will be drafted during the fishing moratorium.

Protesters argued the closure would violate their traditional subsistence rights.

IRT “This is our ice box, not a playground for the rich.” Back in the good old {that no one is quite sure when that was but for sure it is not now] there were more ocean resources. There was also an effective control/kapu system. Now that the proverbial ice box is getting emptied out it is necessary for todays kapu system to step in/ DLNR. Ten years is really not enough time for an over fished area to regenerate and come back into balance. The “me now people” [that helped wipe it out] ought to be thinking about their mo’opuna and what will be around if steps are not taken to set up preserves now. In the South Pacific where people really do live out of the ocean large amounts of reef are protected. The spill-over observations support set-asides as a practical way to generate better fishing in the future.

If you don’t know, our Pacific Ocean is dying because of Fukushima. The sharks are coming to shore looking for human food. We have to find another way. I love fish and lobster too. This is a grim reality that is being coveredup. Thank Fukushima. Hawaii will never be the same. Very sad, I know. I am very sad too. I turn to God now for our guidance.

You are displaying great ignorance. The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 and as soon as people moved out of the contaminated zone fish and wildlife there exploded.Instead of humans there is an over-abundance of fish and wildlife there now. Fukushima is nothing in comparison.

It was stolen and is being sold in Chinatown, at Shirokiya and Murukai and other Japanese orienated markets, and at supermarkets in their fresh fish departments to locals mostly.

The Protesters are too busy protesting to hunt, fish and grow taro. Good thing they can use their EBT to buy spam, Vienna sausage, canned tuna, corned beef and poi. Ono.

  5. justmyview371 says:

If there are a bunch of subsistence rights, fishing should not be banned at all.
