Honolulu City Council Chairman Ernie Martin sustained cuts to his arm and a hip bruise after he was apparently struck by a vehicle while crossing a street in Makiki on Friday morning.
Martin was in a crosswalk on Pensacola Street when he was “knocked down” by a vehicle turning left from Lunalilo Street, in front of the Makiki Post Office, at about 10:30 a.m., said Peter Boylan, the chairman’s aide.
“He is fine but went to Queen’s (Medical Center) to get precautionary X-rays,” Boylan said in a text message. “He fell pretty hard on his forearm and right leg.”
Boylan said that Martin quipped he had been hit harder when he played football.
Martin posted a photo on Twitter that was captioned, “Eh, drivers, when approaching a crosswalk, look out for pedestrians! Got knocked down in Makiki this am #hitraffic.”
Martin sent the tweet “as a reminder to drivers to please be careful when approaching crosswalks,” Boylan said.
A police report was filed, he said.
