Robbery of visitor brings arrests, charges
Two people have been charged with various offenses on Hawaii island after a Texas man reported being robbed at Kaloko-Honokohou National Historical Park in Kona.
Justin Matias, 27, of Kona was charged Monday with robbery and two counts of car theft. His bail was set at $45,000. Briana Pama, 23, of Kealakekua was charged with resisting arrest and two counts of car theft. She posted $4,500 bail.
Police said a 25-year-old Bellaire, Texas, man was at Kaloko Fishpond at about 7:15 p.m. Friday when he saw another man rummaging through his bag. He told police the man punched him in the face and fled with his cellphone and prescription glasses.
Responding officers tried to stop a Chevrolet Impala that was leaving the area. On Saturday officers located the Impala, which had been stolen from a rental car company, in a parking lot at Kealakekua Bay. Through an investigation, they determined Pama had been driving the Impala and that Matias was her passenger. Police said they later determined Matias robbed the victim. They recovered the victim’s cellphone as well as the keys to another stolen car that had been found Friday at the historical park.
