Sixty-eight public schools statewide will be serving free weekday meals to children this summer through the Department of Education’s summer food service program.
Beginning in early June, meals will be served free of charge to children 18 years and younger Monday through Friday, with most schools serving breakfast and lunch. Schools will be closed for the Kamehameha Day (June 10) and Independence Day (July 4) holidays.
The summer meals program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was established to ensure that low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer. The 2015-16 school year ended Thursday, and the new academic year begins Aug. 1 for students.
To be eligible, a school must have at least 50 percent of its enrolled students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches and some type of summer program on campus. Meal recipients do not have to be enrolled in those classes to be served, the DOE said.
“Summer is a time that can be a gap period where some students miss out on meals,” Dann Carlson, the DOE’s assistant superintendent for school facilities and support services, said in a statement. “We are grateful that so many schools stepped forward this year to participate in the program and provide their students and other children the opportunity to receive meals.”
Start and end dates vary by campus. The DOE recommends calling your neighborhood school if dates aren’t listed below, and to find out the specific times for meal service.
