Marshall quarterback transfers to UH
Quarterback Kyle Gallup, who played for Marshall University in 2015, is joining the University of Hawaii football team this summer.
Gallup might be eligible to compete this coming season because he was not on scholarship at Marshall and he will join UH as a walk-on. The NCAA usually requires a Division I player to sit out a season after transferring, but there is an exemption for a transfer involving a walk-on.
Gallup, who is 6 feet 2 and 215 pounds, redshirted as a freshman in 2015.
Gallup said his decision is partially family-related. His mother was diagnosed with a muscular condition that is aggravated by cold weather. She is pondering a move from Colorado to Hawaii. Gallup said the family is hopeful moving from the cold climate “can fix her condition or, at least, help it.”
Gallup said he enjoyed his time at West Virginia-based Marshall. The Thundering Herd defeated Connecticut, 16-10, to win the 2015 St. Petersburg Bowl and clinch a third consecutive 10-victory season.
“It was a good time for me,” Gallup said. “But as far as playing, it would be better if I went somewhere else. Then when everything happened with my mom, it was better to be closer to home.”

Ikaika Woolsey, Beau Reilly and Aaron Zwahlen were the only scholarship quarterbacks who participated in spring training. Walk-on quarterbacks Hunter Hughes and Toagamalu Brown also were on the spring roster. Cole McDonald, who signed in February, joins next month.
Gallup is familiar with Nick Rolovich, UH’s first-year head coach and a former Warrior quarterback.
“My dad’s really good friends with (John) Elway,” Gallup said of the Hall of Fame quarterback who now is the Denver Broncos’ executive vice president. “Rolo played with Denver back in the day. John knew about him.”
The Gallup poll on Rolovich? “He’s a very personable person,” Gallup said. “He connects well with the players. I think I’m going to enjoy that.”

Traveling athletes are a common site in college football. Trouble is, Marshall plays a really minor league schedule. Even more so than the uH. Hard to see him starting….
For a person who seems to think all university sports programs should be eliminated, you seem to know a lot about football. Have you ever seen a U.H. game in any sport?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! GOOD ONE, bnc_connection!
well, they did have two QBs taken in the first round in Pennington and leftwich, which are two more than the UH. plus, they had randy moss, ahmad bradshaw, and cj spillman…so, the program does attract some talent. whether this kid dies, I don’t know…but I wouldn’t sell the program short just because of the competition it plays.
“does” not “dies”…a typo, sorry.
Geez, he’s doing this in part for his Mom to help her improve her health. Maybe some people can’t relate to that.
You misspelled “site”. Product of UH? The University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks plays an even more minor league schedule than Marshall.
Why does UH accept U of North Dakota rejects?
Its the “Mandan” claim!
Okay, explain to me this then… What school or where did the SECOND OVERALL PICK in this years 2016 NFL Draft came from???
Yup, even Jerry Rice came out of that no-name, small university–Mississippi Valley State.
sight..sorry..in a rush…I wish this man luck.
Wonder if we’ll see any transfers from Baylor???, as in DL guys?
Good thing he’s a walk-on, because looks like UH is getting crowded with qb’s.
why. they’ll get a top notch coach. the new coach cant recruit for another year so its not as if anyone is in jeopardy, plus they are getting a top tier education.
Baylor has big bucks to pay their new coach, they dont try to get the best coach for the least money. They hire coaches who will win games.
And your point is?
Well that’s different, now UH will have 7 potential QBs. Can always hope that someone will come out strong.
Marshall was 10-3 in Conference USA with a 16-10 bowl win over UConn. UH couldn’t do that. Until UH starts winning again, they are a minor league football team in any conference. There are no clear-cut favorites for the QB position and he may be better than any of the other QBs. Who knows? It would be worth seeing what Kyle Gallup has.
Good point. Gallup is a walk on so UH has nothing to lose.
Maybe he will be a surprise package for UH.
Back in the Day? Rolo isnt THAT old.
Nick Rolovich / Kyle Gallup = June Jones / Colt Brennan 2.0? Here’s hoping!
looks like we know who are starter is………
