Arrest of suspect in fatal fight closes freeway
A 48-year-old man died Monday of head injuries from an early morning fight at a North School Street gas station, police said.
Police said the victim and another man were involved in an argument at the Aloha Gas station on North School Street in Kalihi just before 5 a.m. The victim was treated by paramedics and taken in critical condition to the hospital, where he died.
Police chased a suspect to the Gulick Avenue overpass, where he was apprehended. All westbound lanes of the H-1 freeway were closed for nearly an hour in connection with the incident.
The suspect was taken to the hospital for observation. He was later arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Did he fall? Did something fall on him? Was he assaulted? Inquiring minds want to know.
scary
Your favorite word.
scary place north dakota is…
especially in the winter. lol
Hope it was worth it. All that attitude, testosterone, chest thumping.
HPD should have shot this guy dead who’d try to flee the scene putting alot of motorists in danger!. Now, we taxpayers are going to have to pay to house this low-life
Harambe is more deserving to live than this worthless piece of you know what. Nobody deserves to die
Like I said, he should’ve jumped…Save HI taxpayers for a cost of a trial and housing in jail…
He didn’t jump so… .
It does sound like a classic second-degree murder. The assaulter will claim he was defending himself and an accident happened. He will likely walk unless there are eye witnesses.
Boy and people talk stink about Waianae.
Actually not in Hawaii. 2nd degree murder is what you’re thinking of as 1st degree. First Degree Murder in Hawaii involves aggravating circumstances such as multiple victims, murder-for-hire, murder of a peace officer, etc.
I have no first hand knowledge of this incident but I’ve seen others where two guys are fighting, one falls backwards striking head to pavement. Suspect might be arrested for murder 2, case is investigated as a murder 2 but eventually goes to court as a Manslaughter because it’s tricky to prove intent to kill in those cases.
Once again. I don’t have an information on this particular case. Comments are general only.
Could also end up as a 3rd degree assault. Happened before.
ummm..read the updated news item. I was correct about the second-degree murder charge.
Again, once a suspect is booked, his name becomes public knowledge and can be listed. So where’s the suspect’s name? Anyone can view the booking sheet.
Came back from Vegas a couple of weeks ago and was reading their newspaper. Always had the suspects name. Don’t know what the problem is with this rag.
Other news sites named him as Rimoni Pologa-Seiuli from Waipahu.
They should have let him jump.
Totally agree.
One less loser in the gene pool?
He had “no balls ” to jump ….
Traffic backed up for hours while they clean up the mess or house him in prison for couple of years and pick up that tab. Tough decision.
If that happened and you got stuck in the resulting traffic gridlock, then you better hope you had the good sense to visit the bathroom before you took to the road.
🙂
Nowadays you gotta go take a bathroom break before heading on the roads and freeways. Friday had the gridlock on H1 westbound after the Waipahu offramp, Saturday the overturned truck H1 westbound by Makakilo offramp, and now this.
Don’t worry, the rail will fix everything. The homeless riding the train will never notice if you soil the seats while on the train in the event there’s a delay, they do it all the time on the bus.
Too bad the cops caught him and pulled him back up….
‘Article didn’t say he was going to jump. Just another example where the paper tells you something happened but that is about it.
Are you nuts? The freeway would probably still be closed and cops would be giving out tickets on the freeway to those stuck in traffic using their cell phones.
You’ve gotta love the headline: zero mention that Honolulu police risked their lives pulling a suspected murderer off of a dangerous freeway overpass, arresting him and bringing an end to the case. The Officers could easily have gone over the overpass along with the suspect and been seriously hurt or worse.
You’re right, but that’s what they signed-up for. That’s what they get paid for.
agree..Thanks to HPD for some very good work and for their patience.
I give HPD top marks on this one. After listening to this idiot for 2 hours they saved his life. In the process risking the lives of multiple officers.
Send this guy to the zoo that shot it’s gorilla.
Jump…Jump…Jump…
Well, we don’t know any details. Far all we know is the guy who died might have possibly been the assailant and this guy might have been defending himself. Not enough info here to determine if he’s even guilty other than running from the cops. For all we know is this could be just a drug deal gone bad between two criminals.
Generally victims don’t run from the police and threaten to commit suicide….
he should’ve jumped. Save HI taxpayers for the cost of a trial…
Just another day for some stuck in traffic over the holiday weekend.
