Hawaii basketball’s depleted frontcourt is closer to a reformation.
UH got a big pickup on Thursday in 6-foot-8 Gibson Johnson out of Salt Lake Community College, representing the seventh scholarship awarded for the 2016-17 season. The power forward announced his commitment on Twitter; UH is expected to make things official in the near future.
Johnson was scheduled to take an official visit to North Carolina State today, but it didn’t transpire. The sophomore ultimately favored the Rainbow Warriors over the Wolf Pack and Utah Valley for his last two years of college eligibility.
“This team this year kind of showed the potential of the program,” Johnson said in a phone interview with the Star-Advertiser, referring to UH’s 28-6 squad, which won a game in the NCAA Tournament. “I want to keep it moving forward.”
Johnson averaged 12.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per game for SLCC, the NJCAA national champion at 31-8. He was his team’s third-leading scorer and shot 55.1 percent from the field, 29.6 percent from 3-point territory and 65.1 percent at the foul line.
“I feel like my game fits perfectly into Coach (Eran) Ganot’s system, where he likes skilled guys who can kind of do it all and work hard,” he said. “He can put me at any spot on the floor and I’ll be able to be successful and help them out.”
The Utah native said UH’s postseason ban for the coming year is a “bummer” but looks forward to joining Mike Thomas and Jack Purchase as well as 2016 signee Zigmars Raimo of Latvia in the frontcourt and helping the team back to the NCAA Tournament as a senior.
Johnson, 24, went on a church mission to Brazil prior to his two seasons at SLCC. He hopes to add “maturity” to his new team, which has one more scholarship to assign beyond him.
“It was a lot of fun to get out of my comfort zone and go into a world that I didn’t really know,” Johnson said. “It probably made this decision to go to Hawaii a lot easier, because I know I can go out and do it on my own and have fun being away from family.”
