Surfer Granger Larsen clinched Heat 17 with a score of 13.50 to advance to Round 4 of the Ichinomiya Chiba Open on Tuesday in Chiba, Japan. Tanner Hendrickson also advanced with a score of 12.00 in Heat 22 of Round 3.

Hawaii’s Torrey Meister, Seth Moniz, Kaito Kino, Ezekiel Lau, Mason Ho and Keanu Asing missed the cut.

Local gymnasts medal at national meets

Jesse-Lee Pakele, 11, won gold in the pommel finals at the Jr. Olympic Gymnastics National Championships on May 8 in Battle Creek, Mich. Pakele, who competes with Hawaiian Island Twisters, recorded a combined score of 26.60 after two days. He also medaled on rings with a score of 24.75 for fifth place.

Kalyxta Gamiao medaled on the floor exercise in the girls’ competition in Fort Worth, Texas. Gamiao scored a 9.575 in the Junior A Division.
