Rocks along the 5.5-mile marker of Mauna Kea Access Road.

HILO >> The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is asking the public for help in identifying a man who may have placed rocks on Mauna Kea Access Road on May 16.

The rocks were placed at the 5.5-mile marker in the downhill lane of the summit road in the middle of a sharp right corner and created a potential safety hazard, DLNR officials said in a press release.

A security camera at the Hale Pohaku Visitor Center showed a shirtless man in board shorts carrying a plastic gallon container and a black backpack walking uphill along the road.

A telescope worker later confirmed seeing that same man at the time the rocks were being placed.

The man is described as being 5 feet, 5 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a slim build. He was wearing a light-colored white to light gray board shorts and slippers.

The DLNR is asking anyone who has any information to contact the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement.

Was he making a religious statement by invoking Madame Pele in some way? Maybe it’s for a reason so obscure we’ll never know unless we ask him, and maybe not even then.
