About 10 percent of residences that receive city trash pickup will see route schedule changes effective the week of June 6, the Department of Environmental Services announced Monday.
Postcards were mailed last week to about 15,000 of the approximately 160,000 homes that receive automated collection service to inform residents about the impending changes, the department said.
The 10 affected neighborhoods are in, but do not include all of, Haleiwa, Kailua Heights, Kailua, Kaneohe, Kuliouou, Makakilo, Nanakuli-Maili, Mililani Mauka, Mililani and Wahiawa.
To avoid confusion, the department is not posting maps of the new routes on its website until June 3, when the old maps will come down and new ones will go up in their place.
The new route maps are, however, available now on the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s website at 808ne.ws/245hyZS.
All those who will see route changes should have been sent a postcard. In cases where postcards were returned, refuse workers are hand-delivering notices to affected homes, the department said.
Environmental Services Director Lori Kahikina said the updated routes are the first since 2014. “We used route optimization software and a close review of route sizing to make routes more efficient, while providing room for expansion,” she said in a news release.
