Hale Nani inmate runs away, comes back with contraband items
Hale Nani was put on lockdown Saturday morning after an inmate was seen running out of a dorm with a silver bag, the Hawaii Department of Public Safety said.
Around 11 a.m., inmate Sloan Deleon was seen running up a hill. The facility was placed on lockdown as officers chased Deleon. A few minutes later, Deleon ran back to the dorm carrying a silver bag and climbing through a window.
After a headcount, all inmates were accounted for and the silver bag was recovered, the department said.
In the bag was candy, tobacco, and what appeared to be marijuana, officials said.
The lockdown was lifted at 1 p.m.
“I commend our staff for their fast work in identifying the individual who tried to bring in contraband and for locating the contraband quickly and efficiently,” said Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda. “Staff did everything they were trained to do.”

Problem with local youths that have had little parental guidance while they were growing up. In some cases it is not for lack of trying but economic reasons that require both parents to hold possibly second jobs. Thus, there can be very minimal guidance. Children also witnessing their parents struggling are affected psychologically. Like the deck is stacked against them. In the old days, everyone was struggling, so there was commonality and wealth differences were absent. It’s much more difficult to grow up in today’s world.
Meanwhile back at the farm – wonder how the workers that are striking are holding out.
