A Tibetan Buddhist teacher will speak at a three-day event this month at the Bodhi Tree Meditation Center in Nuuanu.
Khentrul Lodro Thaye Rinpoche will give a talk titled “Finding Joy in Troubled Times” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the center, 654-A Judd St. A suggested donation at the door is $10 to $20, but no one will be turned away for not donating.
Rinpoche will also take part in a two-day retreat, “Bringing Suffering and Happiness Onto the Path,” which is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. May 28, and 2 to 4 p.m. and 4:30 to 6 p.m. May 29. Preregistration is $75; general admission at the door is $90; admission for full-time students with ID is $50.
Born and raised in Tibet, Rinpoche became a monk at age 7. As the abbot of a Tibetan monastery, he is responsible for more than 300 monks and more than 100 children — providing them with food, medicine, lodging, education and Buddhist training, according to a news release. In addition, he offers support to other regional monasteries.
Rinpoche has established more than 20 practice and meditation centers. He travels and teaches for eight months of the year. His main retreat center is in the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. He has students on Oahu, Kauai and Maui.
While all of his groups practice meditation and other techniques for cultivating the mind, they also emphasize helping others, the release said. For more information, visit katogcholing.com or call Ka‘ohulani McGuire at 348-2980 or Alyson Cheung at 554-8193.
