A 52-year-old visitor from San Diego was forced to spend Tuesday night in Iao Valley State Park, where she got lost while hiking.
Maui Fire Department officials reported that a Kihei woman called 911 after she received a text message from her friend saying she was lost and disoriented while hiking.
At 7:28 p.m. Tuesday a Wailuku fire crew confirmed the hiker’s car was still in the park’s parking lot. Fire rescue crews hiked up about a mile on the ridge trail but could not find the hiker. Rescue crews left the park at about 10:30 p.m. after suspending the search for the night.
The woman was located Wednesday morning at a stream above the park and airlifted to the parking lot at about 6:15 a.m. She sustained only minor scrapes and scratches and declined medical treatment.
Wastewater test dye could stain the ocean pink
Starting Monday, the Kauai Wastewater Management Division will conduct a two-day ocean study in waters off Lydgate Beach Park to “evaluate ocean characteristics including ocean current flow directions and the effects of ocean tides near the Wailua Wastewater Treatment Plant ocean outfall,” Kauai County officials said in a news release Tuesday.
For the study, a dye will be added to treated wastewater discharged to the ocean through the outfall, officials said. The dye could make the waters appear pink.
