By holding steady on her back nine, Kaira Nabeshima ended up running way with the 66th Jennie K. Wilson Invitational title on Sunday.
Nabeshima, a 16-year-old from Kumamoto, Japan, played her final 13 holes at even par on her way to a 3-over 75 in the final round at Mid-Pacific Country Club and claimed the championship flight with a three-day total of 5-over 221.
Nabeshima said through an interpreter that she’d won five amateur tournaments in Japan and earned another in her first trip outside the country.
Nabeshima had at least a share of the lead after all three rounds and said she “tried to be cool” while holding on to the top spot on Sunday.
After a shaky start with three bogeys in her first five holes, Nabeshima calmly hit fairways for most of the afternoon and ended up six shots clear of the field.
The key to her round?
“Deep breaths.”
Haruka Amamoto began the final round one shot behind Nabeshima and took a two-shot lead at 3 over with a birdie on the par-5 fifth hole while Nabeshima bogeyed. But a double bogey on No. 6 dropped Amamoto into a tie and Nabeshima moved ahead again when Amamoto bogeyed Nos. 8 and 9.
Nabeshima opened up a four-shot lead after her approach set up a short birdie putt on the par-5 12th and managed the shifting breezes in Lanikai to remain in control the rest of the way.
Nabeshima earned her first trip to Hawaii with a second-place finish in the Misaki Cup in March and joined the list of Jennie K. champions dating back to the inaugural tournament in 1950.
Amamoto finished second at 11 over and ‘Iolani senior Chloe Wong placed third at 14 over in her first appearance in the event, her final round highlighted by a birdie putt from off the green on the par-3 11th.
“I didn’t really think about much other than trying to play my best, fairways and greens. I tried to beat the two scores I shot before,” said Wong, who signed for a 77 on Sunday. “I could have done better but I made a lot of good up and downs.”
Punahou sophomore Claire Choi carded the low round of the day with an even-par 72 and finished fifth, a shot behind Kaiser’s Keila Baladad.
After playing 54 holes over the past three days, Wong, who moved to Hawaii from Singapore last August and will attend Santa Clara in the fall, has 36 more ahead of her in today’s U.S. Women’s Open Sectional Qualifier at Waialae Country Club.
The 31-player field competing for one spot in the U.S. Women’s Open includes Punahou senior Mariel Galdiano, winner of the last two Jennie K. titles, and Buffanblu teammate and high school state champion Allisen Corpuz.
Other Jennie K. division winners included two-time champion Bobbi Kokx (A flight), Lisa H. Lee (B flight) and Lisa Lee (C flight), Yoshiko Rawson (D flight) and Jeanette Takahashi (E flight).
