The Hawaii track and field team had three runner-up finishes at the Big West Championship on Friday in Long Beach, Calif.
Karen Bulger finished second in the javelin with a throw of 46.68 meters. Tiziana Ruiz Dominguez placed second in the pole vault after clearing 4.06 on her third attempt. She lost to Cal State Northridge’s Gardenia Centanaro, who cleared 4.06 on her first attempt.
Alex Porlier Langlois was second in the discus with a throw of 52.65 and Charlina Ioane was third at 52.42. The Rainbow Wahine are third in the team standings with 35 points. UC Davis leads with 62.5 heading into today’s final day of competition.
Medeiros set for today’s UFC 198
Makaha’s Yancy Medeiros weighed in at 156 pounds for today’s lightweight fight against Francisco Trinaldo at UFC 198 in Curitiba, Brazil.
The fight will be shown on Fox Sports 1 at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Medeiros (12-3, 3-3 UFC) has won three of his past four fights since starting 0-2 in the UFC. Trinaldo (19-4, 9-3 UFC), who is fighting in his home country, has won his past five fights. The main event is a UFC heavyweight title fight between champion Fabricio Werdum against Stipe Miocic.
UHH’s Gaspar earns All-American honors
University of Hawaii Hilo softball designated player Bailey Gaspar was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s All-America second team on Friday.
The sophomore from Vancouver, Washington batted .415 in 49 games with six home runs, nine doubles and 36 RBIs. In PacWest conference play, she led the conference with a .506 batting average and .807 slugging percentage.
Earlier in the month, Gaspar was named to NFCA and NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association West Region teams. She was also named UH Hilo’s female student-athlete of the year.
