University of Hawaii right-hander Brittany Hitchcock was named Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week on Monday after earning two complete-game victories in UH’s series win over Cal Poly.
Hitchcock, a sophomore, threw 16 innings in three appearances in the series and gave up two runs, one earned, on 10 hits with nine strikeouts and walked none.
Hitchcock went the distance in Friday’s series opener, finishing with five strikeouts in UH’s 3-2 comeback win. She retired the first 17 batters she faced in UH’s home finale on Saturday, taking a perfect game into the sixth inning before giving up a two-out single. She faced two batters over the minimum in eight innings and posted her fourth shutout of the season in UH’s 1-0 win.
Hitchcock lowered her earned-run average to 2.09 and has 99 strikeouts and seven walks in 164 innings. She leads the nation in walks allowed per seven innings.
UH (23-28, 7-11 Big West) closes the season with a three-game series at Long Beach State (30-19, 10-8) starting Friday. Saturday’s 9 a.m. doubleheader will be shown on ESPN3.
Hilo’s Gaspar earns West Region honor
University of Hawaii Hilo sophomore Bailey Gaspar has been selected first-team NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association Softball West Region Designated Player.
Gaspar batted .415 in 49 games with nine doubles, six home runs and 36 RBIs. She batted .506 with a slugging percentage of .807 in Pacific West Conference play. Early this month, Gaspar was named first team designated player on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II All-Region team.
