The Moanalua High School team of OMG Capital captured second place last month in the Knowledge@Wharton High School Investment Competition in Philadelphia.
Seniors Gina Watanabe and Lei Lily Tam and juniors Jasmine Loo and Gary Kwong comprised the Moanalua team, which managed a $100,000 portfolio during the 10-week competition using the Wharton OTIS online trading system. Their teacher/adviser was Moanalua High’s Fred Ito, who earned a Wharton M.B.A. in 1984. The team won $1,000.
Teams were required to use the knowledge they gained during the competition to develop an investment strategy. Winners were selected on the strength and articulation of that strategy, not on the growth of their portfolios.
Sixteen finalist high school teams were selected from more than 200 teams from around the world to go to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania to make their presentations 30. Three of the schools gave their presentations remotely.
