Flash flood warning expires on Maui; high surf advisory in effect for all islands

NOAA/NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

Rains from a stalled weather system near Maui flooded parts of Hana, prompting a flash flood warning that expired at 4 p.m. today.

The National Weather Service said police and county emergency management officials reported flooding along Ulaino and Waikoloa Road.

The Hana Highway reopened near Mile Marker 22 near Wailua after highway crews remove downed trees and rocks in the road, the Maui Police Department said in a tweet.

National Weather Service forecasters said radar showed moderate rain, falling at a rate of up to an inch an hour, just after noon.

A flash flood advisory also expired at 3 p.m. as showers eased.

Elsewhere, the weather service expects mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers over windward areas and sunny skies over leeward areas of most islands on Mother’s Day.

A high surf advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday for south shores of all islands.

Surf of 5 to 8 feet is expected to peak today and decline Monday and Tuesday.

Forecasters warn that beach-goers should expect strong, breaking waves, shore break and strong currents that could make swimming dangerous.

On Saturday, the high of 87 degrees at the Hilo airport broke the record for today’s date of 86 set in 1997.

On Friday, the high temperature at Lihue Airport hit 89 degrees, shattering a record for the date of 85 degrees reached in 1981 and 1967.

The temperature is also the highest recorded for the month of May on Kauai. The previous monthly record in Lihue was 88 degrees set in 1982.

Forecasters said sunny skies and warm, southwesterly winds ahead of a cold front contributed to the record highs.

Cooling northeasterly tradewinds and cloudy skies should keep temperatures below record levels today.
