Fire investigators determined food left unattended on a stove caused a fire in a ground-floor apartment in a two-story building in McCully on Wednesday night, Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins said.
Damage was estimated as $30,000 to the structure and $5,000 to its contents, Jenkins said.
Ten fire companies with 35 firefighters responded to the blaze, which was reported at 9:26 p.m. on Date Street. The fire was brought under control at 9:34 p.m.
No one was in the unit where the fire started. No injuries were reported.
Neighbors noticed smoke from the fire and attempted to control the blaze with garden hoses, Jenkins said. All other occupants were able to leave the building without injury.
