Change in weather will bring vog, rain, humidity

NOAA / NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

A cold front approaching the islands from the northwest will bring a change to the weather in the islands.

A change in the weather will bring humid conditions, vog and afternoon showers to the islands. Some of the showers may be heavy on Thursday and Friday.

Windward and mauka areas got some rain overnight and this morning as tradewinds pushed an old weather system back over the islands. The showers could continue this afternoon, but are not likely to spread into leeward areas as tradewinds weaken.

A cold front approaching the state from the northwest is beginning to cut off the breezy tradewinds of the last week.

The lack of tradewinds will bring muggy conditions Thursday and Friday, along with volcanic haze and afternoon showers in leeward areas as clouds build up over mountain slopes and central plains because of daytime heating.

“Some of the showers could be a little heavier than usual,” said Matt Foster, a meteorologist with the Honolulu office of the National Weather Service.

The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for the possibility of locally heavy rain Thursday afternoon, with a 50 percent chance of rain Thursday night and a 70 percent chance of rain on Friday.

Hazy conditions could continue through Saturday, but tradewinds should return this weekend and push the vog away by Saturday afternoon.
