It’s unfortunate that drag racers are leaving their tread marks on a Dec. 7, 1941, battle site at Marine Corps Air Station Ewa in Kalaeloa. The car drivers trespass on the site where aircraft were destroyed and Marine Corps defenders died, according to an area historian.

However, it’s been difficult to curb their activity, with the Navy, Hunt Development Group (which leases the land) and the Honolulu Police Department pointing fingers at one another.

Perhaps a group of volunteers could patrol the area and give an impromptu history lesson to the drag racers, who likely are unaware of the area’s rich past. At least 60 acres are expected to be recognized by the National Park Service, which oversees the National Register of Historic Places.

That’s one takeaway from the latest Hawaiian Airlines statistic: For the first time since it was founded 86 years ago,

the airline reaped more than $100 million from checked-baggage fees and charges for cancellations and flight changes.

It’s unlikely the flying public possesses that much discipline, so Hawaiian and other airlines will continue to profit from such add-ons.

Industry officials say this allows travelers to choose a lower base fare and customize their purchase with other services.

What else might air- lines deem optional? We probably shouldn’t ask.
