University of Hawaii’s Emily Maglio made a block during the match against USC at the Aloha Invitational tournament held in Waikiki on April 23.

Just as Hawaii swept through last week’s inaugural Big West beach volleyball tournament, the Rainbow Wahine swept the conference’s major awards that were announced today.

Redshirt freshman Emily Maglio picked up two honors, named as Freshman of the Year, as well as partnering with senior Katie Spieler as the Pairs Team of the Year. Jeff Hall, in his second year, was named Coach of the Year.

Spieler-Maglio were 18-4 overall, helping No. 5 Hawaii (18-6) to an at-large berth in this week’s first NCAA championship as the No. 5 seed. The duo were 9-4 when playing at the No. 1 flight and 9-0 at No. 2.

Maglio, a first-team all-conference selection for the Hawaii indoor team last fall, hit .792 in her first season on the beach. She and Spieler also were named to the six-team pairs first team as were the duo of Nikki Taylor and Lara Schreiber.

Named to the second team were the SandBows pairs of Ari Homayun-Hannah Zalopany, Ginger Long-Mikayla Tucker and Hannah Rooks-Ka’iwi Schucht.
