U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, and Angela Davis, an activist and professor, will be the keynote speakers at two University of Hawaii-Manoa commencement ceremonies May 14.
The undergraduate ceremony will run from 9 a.m. to noon and advanced degrees from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. Doors for the undergraduate ceremony will open at 7:45 a.m. and at 2 p.m. for the advanced degree ceremony.
After the ceremonies, guests will be able to greet undergraduates whose last names begin with A through N and all advanced degree graduates at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. Undergraduates whose names begin with O through Z will be at Les Murakami Stadium. Parking is free and first come, first served. Shuttles will be available at various campus locations.
Schatz is the undergraduate keynote speaker. He’s a graduate of Pomona (Calif.) College with a degree in philosophy. Davis is a distinguished professor emerita of history and feminist studies at the University of California at Santa Cruz. She will address those earning advanced degrees.
On Saturday more than 200 students will earn their bachelor’s degrees and certificates at the University of Hawaii-West Oahu commencement, marking the institution’s 40th anniversary.
The ceremony starts at 9 a.m. at the university’s lower courtyard and will feature Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald as the keynote speaker.
Guests may arrive as early as 8 a.m. Family and friends can greet graduates following the ceremony at about 10:30 a.m. on the Great Lawn. Parking is limited. Carpooling is recommended.
