The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team split a Sunday nonconference doubleheader at Hawaii Hilo, winning 4-0 in the opener and losing the second game 3-1 in seven innings.
In game one, the Sharks (30-20, 19-17 PacificWest Conference) leaned on the right arm of senior pitcher Brandon Van Stone, who threw a complete-game one-hitter and struck out a pair. Offensively, Christian Kapeliela’s RBI double highlighted a two-run sixth inning to give the Sharks the victory.
Game two featured a solid outing by Vulcans (9-33, 7-27) pitcher Jordan Kumasaka, who gave up just one run and scattered six hits in the win. It was a single in the home half of the fifth inning by Michael Jenkerson that brought home Nate Green to break up the 1-all tie and then a fielding error by the Sharks’ center fielder brought in Hawaii Hilo’s third run of the game.
