Hawaii’s battery of Brittany Hitchcock and Rachel Lack powered the Rainbow Wahine softball team to a streak-busting win to close its series at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
UH’s longest skid of the season reached six when four errors aided UCSB’s 9-5 comeback in the first game of a Big West doubleheader at Campus Diamond in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Hitchcock, who took the loss in Friday’s series opener, then struck out four and walked none in a 4-1 win in the series finale. Lack, UH’s sophomore catcher, backed her up offensively by going 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.
“(Hitchcock) was on a mission,” UH coach Bob Coolen said in a phone interview. “She goes, ‘I’m not gonna pitch like I did (on Friday),’ and she didn’t. She pitched really well.”
UH (21-27, 5-10 Big West) closes the home schedule this week with a three-game series against Cal Poly starting Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
After dropping a 9-3 decision to UCSB (24-26, 7-8) on Friday, the Wahine jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning of Saturday’s first game. Breanna Ojala led off the top of the fourth with her second home run of the season. Tayana Mata drove in two more runs later in the inning with a single down the left-field line.
But the UH lead didn’t survive the next half inning. Stacy Cavazos and Melanie Menor delivered two-run singles to give the Gauchos a 5-4 lead. UCSB pulled away with four more runs in the fifth with the aid of two UH errors and clinched the series win.
Lack gave UH the lead in the finale with a two-run homer in the top of the second inning and scored Ojala with a single to center in the fifth. The teams traded runs in the sixth and Hitchcock closed out her 10th win of the season to salvage a split of the doubleheader. She gave up six hits in a bounce-back win.
