Major earthquake hits island in Vanuatu; no tsunami threat to Hawaii
A major earthquake on Malakula Island in Vanuatu does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
The preliminary magnitude 7.0 quake struck 3.1 miles west-southwest of Norsup, Vanuatu at a depth of 21.7 miles at 9:33 a.m. Hawaii time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a “Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.” However, it advised that “hazardous” tsunami waves for coasts located within 186 miles of the epicenter are possible.
No serious injuries were immediately reported.
