When it comes to personal care products, I prefer those without overpowering, artificial fragrances. So Ola Tropical Apothecary was a wonderful discovery. Its products are handcrafted in Hilo and infused with local organic extracts of noni, coconut and olena root (turmeric). The passion fruit body wash is my favorite with its natural lilikoi scent. I also enjoy the lightweight coconut body butter, which has a hint of lemongrass. Body washes range from $10 (2 ounces) to $25 (10 ounces); body butters cost $10 (2 ounces) to $29 (4.6 ounces). Other scents include maile, pikake, plumeria and tuberose. Available at Angels by the Sea Hawaii at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani Resort & Spa, Whole Foods Market and Hakubundo in Ward Warehouse. Leave your kid’s coloring book alone — get your own!
For many people, coloring books were a cherished part of childhood. Favorite stories were offered as a blank slate to fill with color, and the process sparked the imagination — until adolescence made it uncool. A new craze has adults returning to their childhood through coloring books. Publishers Weekly estimated that more than 1.5 million coloring books for grown-ups were sold last year. They are everywhere — bookstores, grocery stores, online — in a variety of themes. Recent selections include “Harry Potter Magical Creatures Coloring Book” ($15.99, Scholastic), “Enchanted Forest” ($15.95, Laurence King Publishing) and “Color Your Own Deadpool” ($9.99, Marvel). — Mike Gordon
Spikes add spice to everyday wardrobe
My everyday look includes a pair of pearl earrings — a gift from the ocean. But on occasion I ditch the “Little Mermaid” vibe to add a bit of punk rock with my sea urchin-inspired earrings by Hawaii designer Amber Chesebro of Salty Girl Jewelry. Made from oxidized sterling silver and powder-coated brass, find these earrings ($282 to $300) at Sand People at the Sheraton Waikiki or online at saltygirljewelry.com. — Lacy Matsumoto, Liliha
Supernatural world reigns in dark ‘Penny Dreadful’
HBO’s “Game of Thrones” gets all the love on Sunday nights, but Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful” — back Sunday for its third season — casts a potent spell with a witch’s brew of vampires, werewolves, black magic and other supernatural grist served up in 19th-century London. The cast in this very adult gothic drama is scary good: Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Patti LuPone and Josh Hartnett, surprisingly effective as an American sharpshooter with a hair-raising secret. Other standouts: Shakespearean stage actor Rory Kinnear as an emo Frankenstein’s monster and scene-stealing Simon Russell Beale’s foppish Egyptologist.
The new season picks up with the cursed protagonists on separate journeys to face their demons — figurative and literal. Beware: Like “GoT,” this is dark stuff, with graphic violence and sexual content. Past seasons are available on Showtime and Amazon. — Christie Wilson
