A team of students from ‘Iolani School placed third out of 33 teams in a national competition testing life skills, the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs said.

The National LifeSmarts Competition was held in Denver, Colo., from April 9-12 and tested students on their knowledge of personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities.

The team comprised Chase Nakamura, Drey Tengan, Landon Sur, Norton Kishi and Sean Callahan. The students were led by coach James Rubasch.

“We are very proud of ‘Iolani’s performance at the competition. The students demonstrated their LifeSmarts knowledge and they did an excellent job of representing the state of Hawaii through their sportsmanship,” said DCCA Securities Commissioner Ty Nohara.

The students won a team trophy, $50 Amazon gift cards and a $750 educational scholarship.
