Bomb squad investigates car crash
A portion of Tantalus Drive in Makiki was closed Tuesday after a police bomb squad was called to the scene of an accident to investigate a possible explosive device, which turned out to be PVC pipe.
Capt. Keith Horikawa, spokesman for Honolulu Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division, said police were called at about 2:20 a.m. to investigate a report of a two-car accident in the 2000 block of Tantalus Drive.
Patrol officers found an unoccupied black BMW, which they determined had been stolen. Also found was a possible explosive device, and Special Services Division tactical officers were called in, police said.
Horikawa said the device turned out to be a PVC pipe and posed no threat.
The closed section of Tantalus Drive, near the 3000 block, reopened at about 12:40 p.m.
The car might have flipped over during the accident and hit the side of a hill, Horikawa said. It was towed to HPD’s garage for further investigation.
City identifies woman killed in accident
The city Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 22-year-old Kaneohe woman who was killed Sunday in a two-vehicle crash on Kaukonahua Road as Kiana Smith- Simon.
Smith-Simon was the driver of a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier — police said the vehicle came around a turn, crossed over to the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a Subaru — and was taken in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she died.
The driver of the 2003 Subaru, a 35-year-old Waipahu man, was seriously injured but was subsequently treated and released from Queen’s.
Police said Smith-Simon was driving north toward Waialua at about 12:30 p.m. when the crash occurred near Wilikina Drive. The highway had been paved last week, and it was raining at the time of the collision.
An autopsy will be conducted.
This was Oahu’s 12th traffic death this year, compared with 17 at this time a year ago.
Blowtorch suspected in Mililani fire

Firefighters found a smouldering fire within the wall space of a two-story, four-unit townhouse.

In addition to the plumber, one other person was in the unit when the fire broke out.
