Man dies in accident on Kauai; two hurt in Oahu head-on crash

Hawaii’s roadways proved deadly over the weekend.

A 22-year-old Kilauea man was killed Saturday in a two-vehicle crash on Kuhio Highway near Princeville Airport, Kauai police said.

The victim was heading south in a Nissan sedan when he apparently crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Toyota sedan, police said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota, a 62-year-old Hanalei woman, was taken to Wilcox Hospital and was in stable condition, police said. The drivers were the only occupants of the vehicles.

Police closed Kuhio Highway in both directions for about four hours to investigate. The crash happened about 6 p.m.

It was Kauai’s fourth traffic-related fatality this year.

On Oahu, a woman in her early 20s was in critical condition and a man was hurt Sunday after a head-on collision on Kaukonahua Road in Wahiawa.

The crash occurred near the S-turn on Kaukonahua Road about 1 p.m., police said.

Police closed Kaukonahua Road in both directions today after the crash. It was reopened just before 5 p.m.

Paramedics treated the woman, who was not wearing a seat belt, and took her to a hospital in critical condition, an Emergency Medical Services report said.

A 35-year-old man driving the oncoming car was wearing a seat belt and his airbag deployed. He was taken by federal firefighters to a hospital in serious condition.

Headline says “WOMAN” killed on Kauai. Article says 22 y/o “MAN”.

I haven’t been to Haleiwa in six years. I went today with family to enjoy shaved ice at Matsumoto’s. We ended up having coffee instead since it was raining and chilly. The coffee hit the spot. We got caught in a huge traffic jam trying to leave Haleiwa because of the accident. Hope both victims fully recover from their injuries.
