Stephanie Kono has rarely played at Ko Olina without blustery conditions.
Prepared for the wind, Kono focused on execution at Wednesday’s Lotte Championship. The Punahou graduate was steady in her third LPGA tournament of the year, finishing at even-par 72 after the first round.
“It was pretty windy,” Kono said. “I hit a lot of good shots. I just tried to really have a good number on every hole and stick to that number and just put a good swing on it and see where it went. Luckily, a few putts rolled in. It was tough, but it was a good day.”
Kono is tied for 23rd and had the best round among the three local golfers, all from Punahou, in the field. Only a third of the 144 golfers finished at par or under on a day when winds were estimated at 30 mph.
Punahou senior Allisen Corpuz, who made the field after a playoff birdie putt in Sunday’s qualifier, finished at 5-over 77. Michelle Wie, the 2014 champion, finished at 8-over 80, her worst round in nearly three years.
“I played hard out there. Hopefully I can play better tomorrow,” said Wie in her postmatch interview that lasted about 45 seconds.
Kono, 1 over through seven holes, birdied the eighth and remained steady for most of the afternoon. She parred the next five holes and birdied on 14.
“I was hitting the ball really well,” Kono said. “My approach shots were all pretty solid. Like I said, the biggest problems I had maybe were with club selection, but that’s normal for anyone out here in this wind.”
Kono missed a putt and settled for a bogey on 16, but came back with a birdie on 17 to go 1 under. Kono lucked out on 18 when her shot from the fairway hit a sponsor’s sign near the seating area, keeping the ball from sailing out. The former UCLA golfer finished the afternoon with a bogey.
“It’s nice to get off to a good start,” said Kono, who made the cut in one of two LPGA events this year. “Especially in the afternoon, it’s nice to come away with a score like even par.”
Corpuz, among one of the first groups to start the morning at Ko Olina, said she was nervous in her first LPGA tournament. Despite the emotions, the Punahou senior found herself near the top of the leaderboard after going 1-under through the first six holes on the back nine.
“I mean, it’s crazy to be out here,” said Corpuz, runner-up at last year’s state high school championship. “It’s definitely been like one of my biggest dreams to play on the LPGA someday. Just being out here today, was just trying to enjoy the experience.”
She bogeyed 16 and 17 and fell to 3 over after a double bogey on 18.
“For me, that double, I felt like it wasn’t really bad shots,” Corpuz said. “It was like I ended up in the wrong place, and so I was just telling myself I have nine more holes. I can get it back together.”
Corpuz had four bogeys and two birdies on the windy front nine. Corpuz said it’s never been this windy in her previous trips to Ko Olina.
“It’s really just trying to commit to shots for the most part, just knowing you have to maybe aim like 20 yards at the pin to get the results that you want and really committing to that,” Corpuz said of playing in the wind.
The last time Wie shot an 80 was in June 2013 in the first round of the U.S. Women’s Open. She withdrew after that.
“Yeah, just got a couple unlucky bounces, you know,” said Wie, who is tied for 131st. “Just definitely when you’re not swinging it well, you know, definitely playing in the wind is a lot harder.”
Wie is coming off one of her better performances of the season at the ANA Inspiration two weeks ago. She was 7 under through three rounds before a 77 on the final day. She tied for 36th at 2 under for $13,828, her biggest payout of the year. She’s made the cut in five of seven tournaments this year, but has only finished under par in two of those.
“My game has been starting to feel good,” Wie said. “Starting to feel healthy again. Just have to take one of these days.”
