Honolulu firefighters rescued a 30-year-old man from a Wahiawa house that collapsed on him and four other workers Tuesday afternoon. The five workers were renovating the one-story structure on Walker Avenue.
Twenty-one firefighters from six companies were dispatched to the four-bedroom home at 1:28 p.m. and arrived at 1:31 p.m., said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins. While four workers were able to escape uninjured, the fifth worker was trapped inside the building. Firefighters were able to get into the structure and pulled him out at 2:08 p.m.
The man suffered knee injuries and was taken in serious condition to a trauma center, said Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright.
The city Department of Planning and Permitting will send an inspector to investigate the collapse, said department spokesman Curtis Lum. DPP had issued a demolition permit in 2005 to tear down one of two of the structures on the property. Work was completed, and the permit was closed in 2006. Lum said there are no other permit or permit applications on file for the property. The department has no complaints on file about the condition of the structure, he said.
