Missing hiker airlifted from Pearl City trail

A 22-year-old woman, who recently arrived in the islands, was forced to spend the night on the Waimano Trail after she got disoriented while hiking Monday night and called for help.

Fire rescue personnel, with assistance from the department’s helicopter, airlifted the woman to safety at 7:34 a.m. today. She did not need medical attention.

The woman had started her hike around 3:30 p.m.

Four hours later she called the fire department by cellphone saying when was disoriented and needed help.

Rescue personnel were unable to reach her Monday night. Since her battery was running low, the hiker was advised to stay put and rescue personnel would try to reach her in the morning. The search resumed at 5:44 a.m. today.

    There’s your second problem after going solo.

    Hike with a buddy and hike in the morning.

    Five miles in? This one doesn’t sound good.

    She should be fine if she stays in one place. Not too bright hiking an unfamiliar trail all alone though.

    HFD should have given her directions to hike out (go downwards) since she was not injured.
