A 47-year-old Kaneohe man told police that he stabbed his 55-year-old uncle in the back during a family argument in Kaneohe, according to court documents.
Bryan Lucrecio was arrested March 29 and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Darryl Tomita.
A preliminary hearing was scheduled for today in Honolulu District Court.
According to a police affidavit filed in District Court on Friday, Tomita was arguing with his stepfather in the hallway of their home on Waikapoki Road just before 5:30 p.m. March 29.
A witness told police that a third person, Lucrecio, approached Tomita from behind and stabbed him once in his upper back.
Lucrecio fled but was found by police 15 minutes later at Kaneohe Bay Plaza on William Henry Road. Police were assisted by two men who been asked by family friends to help find the suspect.
Lucrecio had his hands up and identified himself to the approaching police officer, the police affidavit said. When a police officer ordered the suspect to lie down, Lucrecio reportedly said, “I know why you here. I stabbed Darryl because of a family dispute. I sorry I did that.”
Tomita was taken to Castle Medical Center in extremely critical condition, according to Emergency Medical Services. He later died at the hospital.
