Police were investigating an apparent drive-by shooting Monday after a pickup truck and a Kalihi residence were struck by gunfire just before sunrise.
The shooting happened at about 6:15 a.m. in a calm but congested neighborhood near Hiu Street and Kamehameha IV Road, near Fern Elementary School. No injuries were reported.
Officers responding to a report of shots fired found a black truck with multiple bullet holes, said Honolulu Police Department spokeswoman Sarah Yoro.
Peter Moses, 65, who had bought the late-model Chevy Colorado in August, said he was getting ready for work when he heard five shots. He said he thought that perhaps someone had fired shots into the air, until a neighbor came by looking for the owner of the pickup truck.
Moses said a bullet lodged in the engine and the truck wouldn’t run. In all, three bullets hit the pickup — two in the left front fender and one that tore through the engine hood before becoming embedded in an apartment building. Two other bullets hit the building.
Moses said police recovered five shells, believed to be from a 9 mm handgun. A neighbor reported seeing two men in a black BMW sedan flee makai on Kamehameha IV Road, he said.
Moses, who has lived in the apartment building for 27 years, said he has no information about the suspects. “We have no enemies,” the Aloha Stadium building maintenance worker said.
Police opened cases for reckless endangering and criminal property damage.
