NFL, HTA extend opt-out deadline for contract on 2017 Pro Bowl
The decision on where to play the 2017 Pro Bowl is going into overtime.
The NFL and Hawaii Tourism Authority today announced by mutual agreement to extend the deadline for opting out of their contract for the 2017 Pro Bowl.
Each party now has until May 31 to exit the contract.
The announcement said, “This extension allows discussions to continue while both parties consider all possible options for 2017.”
Today had been the deadline for the parties to make an announcement under terms of a 2014 agreement that was to have placed both the 2016 and ‘17 games at Aloha Stadium.
The HTA earlier said it wanted the game in Aloha Stadium, but the NFL has been entertaining interest from Sydney, Australia as well as Houston and possibly other cities.

Pro Bowl is a hassle these days. Not like before. Move um.
Instead of paying 5 million to the NFL, charter a few flights and bring in a few more thousand Japanese runners to the Honolulu Marathon. That will bring in a lot of revenue for local businesses, especially if the visitors do their Christmas shopping here!
doesn’t bode well for Hawaii.
Let the NFL remember the Pro Bowl days before they came to Hawaii. No one went to the games.
Why go to the pro bowl? I prefer the old NFC vs AFC. This new format is just stupid.
Just get rid of it already. Tired of subsidizing this boondoggle and seeing HTA’s made-up numbers on the benefit to Hawaii.
First choice, Texas (keep the $ in the USA).
2nd choice to Aussie land……..only the high rollers will fly there?
a poor third choice, Honolulu… our hotels will cry cause no more Pro-Bowl visitors?
Not a good sign.
EITHER WAY…DIVERT 5M BUCKS TO U.H. FB PROGRAM.
Some people always want to give UH sports more money.. Why?
no, we don’t want the subsidized pro bowl and no, we don’t want to pour money down the UH sports department rat hole. UH needs to put money in academics and facility repair.
YOU GUYS WANT WHAT YOU WANT, I WANT WHAT I WANT, AND FERD GETS WHAT HE WANTS. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Goodbye and good riddance. Our tax dollars should not be subsidizing the NFL billionaire owners to play a game here that no one really cares about. The NFL billionaire owners should be paying us to allow them to play it here not the other way around….
Well said…good riddance!
Officials made their “sour grapes” excuse the other day and said it does not bring that much money. It is a boring game that cost the State $5,000,000 to bring her with little return. Put the monty to University of Hawaii athletics.
Off to Sydney. Thank you!
The NFL mafia is dictating again to cities as to best terms for the NFL. I understand locals in SF were very upset and very little benefit to ccommunity for superbowl. Basically a big showcase to market NFL brand….so selfish….and to think Mayor Kirky allowed an exemption to serve liquor at Kuhio Beach and a private venue as well? So elitist….I say, go away NFL and the state saves $5 million to pay them to come to HNL…use the money to help cleanup the homeless problems in Waikiki if the Waikiki hotel mafia so concerned about IMAGE… The 2016 Pro Bowl game is a sham….gloried flag football…the players are not into the game…so shibai…and lowest TV ratings ever…who wants to watch such a poor product…Go home NFL…go bully another city who wants to be taken…
good points
Of course it is being delayed…the NFL is playing each site off each other. They probably have the HTA begging them to pay $10,000,000 to keep the game in Hawaii.
Let the NFL and the Pro Bowl go. Its time is past and the NFL has been taking the local yokels here to the cleaners. Kind of like blackmail by getting the state to pay a $5 million
kick back. What a joke. The NFL must have been having a good horse laugh about how stupid the local yokels are to be paying them on top of all the commercial ads they were able to
sell and of course all the sport paraphernalia as well.
Interesting considering Texas, Arizona and Australia have all put in bids…guess, they’re all local yokels too.
Probably a lot smarter and they do a better job of negotiating.
G’day and good riddance.
The quality of the game has been going downhill for years. Nobody cares about it anymore. Just let it go. Unfortunately, local officials think that this game makes Hawaii a player in big-time sports. It doesn’t. Not at all.
The RAIL will bring so many happy, enthusiastic families conveniently and comfortably to Aloha Stadium to enjoy a great day of watching their favorite NFL heroes work hard and give 110% in a hard fought game! This will bode well for our future and the future of OUR children and Hawaii! Mayor Cladwell is doing a great job!!

I think HTA should spend the money to try to get a major league all-star baseball game here. At least with baseball, the players are willing to give it close to their best effort. I can understand why the NFL football players don’t want to go all out in an all-star game. Why risk a career-ending injury in an all-star game? This whole team captain/pick your team format is making a farce out of the Pro Bowl.
