There have been few last-play cliffhangers in Pro Bowl history, but an announcement of the site for the 2017 game will be one of them.
Under the terms of its contract with the Hawaii Tourism Authority, today is the deadline by which the NFL is scheduled to notify the Hawaii Tourism Authority whether it will opt out of the agreement to return the all-star game to Aloha Stadium in 2017.
“We are continuing to evaluate the Pro Bowl,” a spokesman told the Star-Advertiser on Wednesday.
A spokesman for the HTA said, “they are still talking.”
The HTA has said the game has a $26.2 million impact and draws, “15,000-plus visitors” to the state.
But Hawaii has faced increased competition for the game. Houston, which will host the 2017 Super Bowl, has said it would like to include the Pro Bowl in the package. Sydney, Australia, also has sought the event.
An NFL spokesman has said, “those two cities, among others, have expressed interest, but we’re not going to comment on bids.”
