Burning rubbish ignited a 2-acre brush fire Tuesday on the slopes of Diamond Head, Honolulu firefighters said.
The fire began just before 5 p.m. near the tunnel to Diamond Head Crater, and strong wind drove the flames quickly up the outer slope of the mountain, said Honolulu fire Capt. David Jenkins.
Thirty-seven firefighters in 12 fire companies and a fire helicopter brought the fire under control by 6:44 p.m.
Police closed Monsarrat Avenue from Trousseau to Makapuu streets as firefighters battled the blaze.
Firefighters climbed the slopes to get to the flames.
Jenkins said the brush was ignited by burning rubbish. What sparked the rubbish fire was undetermined.
Aiea resident’s cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said a 28-year-old Aiea man who died when his motorcycle hit steel cables on a Likelike Highway runway truck ramp Sunday died of multiple blunt force injuries.
Police said Joshua Noz was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his motorcycle on the ramp near the Kahekili Highway offramp in Kaneohe and hit the cables.
Noz was taken in critical condition to Castle Memorial Medical Center, where he died.
This was Oahu’s 10th traffic death this year, compared with 13 at this time a year ago.
Police suspect murder attempt in man’s stabbing in Kaneohe
Police are conducting an attempted-murder investigation after a 48-year-old man was stabbed Tuesday in Kaneohe.
Paramedics treated the man, who had a stab wound to the back, and took him in extremely critical condition to a hospital, an Emergency Medical Services report said.
The incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. in the 45-100 block of Waikapoki Road, the report said.
Police said a male was arrested.
