The No. 4 Hawaii Rainbow Wahine water polo team battled back for a win in extra periods over No. 10 UC San Diego, winning 11-10 on Saturday afternoon at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Center.
Tied at nine after regulation, Hawaii (15-5) fell behind in the first extra period as UCSD’s Kayla Fedler scored to give the Tritons a 10-9 lead. But in the second extra period, freshman Femke Aan tied the game with 2:12 remaining, then scored the game-winner with 1:03 left.
A turnover by the Tritons allowed Hawaii to ice the game.
Irene Gonzalez had four goals to lead the Rainbow Wahine, with Julia Barton scoring three and Aan with the two in overtime.
HPU sweeps doubleheader from BYUH
The Hawaii Pacific softball team swept a doubleheader from Brigham Young-Hawaii on Saturday at BYUH.
In the first game, Paige Crawford scattered four hits and five runs in a complete-game win.
Offensively, Noelani Boyer hit a three-run home run and finished with four RBIs, and Dominique Walker added a two-run home run in the seventh as HPU won 11-5. Walker has now hit safely in 14 of her last 15 games.
In the second game, Kristen Caskey pitched a six-hit shutout with no walks and four strikeouts in the Sharks’ 3-0 victory. HPU scored two of its runs in the second inning on a pair of wild pitches.
The Sharks improved to 13-17, 9-9 PacWest, while the Seasiders fell to 9-21, 5-15 PacWest.
>> The Chaminade softball team (8-20, 4-14 PacWest) dropped both games in its doubleheader with No. 11 California Baptist (28-6, 11-3 PacWest) on Saturday in Riverside. The Silverswords lost the first game 9-1 in five innings, and the second 10-2 in five. Chaminade will next face Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif., on Monday.
Gismervik finishes 10th on platform
Hawaii senior diver Amund Gismervik posted a final score of 362.10 to finish 10th overall in the 10-meter platform at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta on Saturday.
Gismervik’s performance notched him another All-America Honorable Mention, his second of the weekend and the fourth honorable mention of his career.
Also, junior swimmer Yuri Samouilich turned in a time of 48.83 in the 100-yard freestyle to finish 41st.
