A 40-year-old man hurt himself in a fall Saturday on the Hana side of Maliko Gulch.
Maui Fire Department crews responded to the incident at 3:30 p.m., Capt. Rylan Yatsushiro said by email.
The man was walking near a cliff when he fell 6 to 8 feet, he said. Fire crews had to hike in over difficult terrain to reach the man, who had an open fracture near his ankle, Yatsushiro said.
Firefighters airlifted him out on the Air 1 helicopter to Hana Highway, where an ambulance was waiting.
The highway was shut down briefly, but was clear by 5:12 p.m., he said.
The man was taken in stable condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Maliko Gulch runs from Maliko Bay, just north of Hookipa Beach Park, up toward Makawao.
Man who died after Pearl City crash ID’d
The Honolulu medical examiner’s office has identified a Mililani man who died after crashing a vehicle as 67-year-old Edwin Costa Jr.
Police said Costa was in a single-occupant, single-vehicle crash in Pearl City on Monday. He had pre-existing medical conditions that were exacerbated by the crash.
Costa was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in good condition, but his condition worsened and he died Thursday.
