70-year-old isle family food business sold
The Edsung Foodservice Co. trucks seen making deliveries around the islands soon will have a mainland owner.
New Hampshire-based C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. has announced the purchase of Edsung through its Hawaiian Housewares Ltd. subsidiary.
After the sale closes, likely in April, Edsung will be consolidated into the Hansen Distribution Group, another C&S division.
Edsung was founded in 1946 by Sungdai Choi as a family-owned, broadline foodservice distributor. The company specializes in bakery and restaurant supplies and serves all of Hawaii.
“Edsung and the Choi family have maintained a very loyal customer base with their high-service business model and strong customer partnerships,” said Rick Cohen, C&S chairman and CEO, in a statement. “We are committed to maintaining Edsung’s distinctive ‘Service with Aloha’ as we welcome the employees and customers into the C&S family.”
C&S, based in Keene, New Hampshire, claims to be the largest wholesale grocery supply company in the U.S. with a record of supply chain innovation. C&S supplies chain stores, military bases, independent supermarkets and institutions with more than 170,000 products.

hard to turn down the highest bidder
Another one bits the dust. Don’t expect the new owners will be able to maintain the same level of service.
What makes you think they had a high level of service to begin with? I think this was an old company that did not change with the times and after multiple generations of trying to run he place, ran out of steam and ambitition.
Yeah, right. Some company in New Hampshire know what ‘Service with Aloha’ means. Maybe they’re thinking of it as in “Aloha means goodbye.”
