A discarded cigarette led to a fire Tuesday that caused more than $200,000 in damage to a home in Waimanalo, firefighters said.
The two-alarm fire started at about 10:10 a.m. in a single-story duplex near Poalima Street and Poalima Place, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins.
More than 30 firefighters responded and contained the blaze by 10:35 a.m., extinguishing it at 11:36 a.m.
Two men in their 50s who were not home at the time of the fire were displaced and being assisted by the American Red Cross.
A neighbor in the adjoining unit evacuated safely.
Damage to the structure and its contents was estimated at $210,000, Jenkins said. He said a fire investigator determined a cigarette started the fire and ruled it accidental.
Body found in brush ID’d as Kahului man
Maui police Tuesday identified the man whose body was found in the brush during the weekend as Michael Colby, 39, of Kahului.
Police said a beachgoer found Colby’s body near Kaa Point off Amala Place in Kahului at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. His body appeared to have injuries, police said.
A blue pickup was found in the proximity of Colby’s body. Police impounded the truck as part of a second-degree murder investigation.
The cause of death has not been released.
Nanakuli wildfire is 90 percent contained
A Nanakuli Valley wildfire that temporarily caused residents to voluntarily evacuate and kept firefighters busy throughout the weekend was 90 percent contained Tuesday, firefighters said.
Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins said the fire was still about 2,500 acres in size Tuesday night.
In the morning, Honolulu firefighters assisted state personnel from the Division of Forestry and Wildlife with checking the perimeter, especially along the Waianae side of the valley, for any hot spots. He said no homes were threatened or damaged.
During the day a DOFAW-contracted helicopter made water drops, and state personnel worked on extinguishing hot spots, Jenkins said.
A Department of Land and Natural Resources spokeswoman said a five-member crew was mopping up hot spots in the back of the valley.
The fire broke out Thursday evening, prompting the voluntary evacuation of homes around Pikaiolena Street for a couple of hours. Over the weekend about 80 firefighters assisted in battling the blaze.
