Bernie Sanders’ wife to make appearances in Honolulu
Jane Sanders, wife of Democratic presidential hopeful U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, will make a pair of appearances in Honolulu on Sunday as the Sanders campaign ramps up its efforts to woo delegates in advance of the March 26 Hawai‘i Democratic Caucus.
The would-be first lady is scheduled to host a private veterans round table with U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard at the Disabled Veterans of America headquarters on Sunday afternoon.
She will also hold a meet-and-greet event at Church of the Crossroads at 5 p.m. The event is open to the public but RSVPs, which can be submitted to http://808ne.ws/1puHP6u, are recommended.
Jane Sanders is a former president of Burlington College in Vermont and has assisted her husband in various roles during his political career. The two married in 1988.
She made headlines last week when she dropped in on Maricopa County (Ariz.) Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s infamous “Tent City” prison facility and engaged the controversial sheriff in a brief back-and-forth over racial profiling and humane prison conditions.
On Saturday, former Hawai‘i mayor Harry Kim and state Sen. Russell Ruderman were on hand as the Sanders campaign opened an office in Hilo. The campaign had previously opened another office at Ward Center in Honolulu on March 9.

Hawai‘i residents can also expect to see much of Bernie Sanders on television as the campaign begins running ads on local stations, including the much celebrated “America” spot, set to music by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Other ads will focus on Sanders’ formative years, his vision for America, and his record of public service.
Sanders could face an uphill battle in Hawai‘i, where much of the Democratic establishment — including U.S. Sens. Brian Schatz and Mazie Hirono and Rep. Mark Takai — has pledged its support to frontrunner Hillary Clinton.
Sanders did pick up a key endorsement earlier this month from Gabbard, who resigned her post as Democratic National Committee vice chair to formally support Sanders.
Donald Trump won the Hawai‘i Republican Caucus on March 9.

I wonder how many conservative are going to block the road to the Bernie Sanders rally?
I love Bernie!
I love Hillary!
Feel the Bern. Get a clue.

I love Trump!
You should marry her.
Why? Do you like her interventionist beliefs?
You should marry him.
I wonder when “conservatives” will start being conservative again?
I wish I was there when Sheriff Joe Arpaio debated prisoner rights with Mrs. Sanders. He probably spanked her and sent her home!
I love Sheriff Joe.
Tita, me too. How can you debate a person who does it right??? I’ll bet he doesn’t get too many repeat offenders!!!!
As of less than a year ago, his malfeasance has cost the taxpayers of his county more than $140 million in law suit settlements, trial awards and legal fees. That’s what you call getting it right? “I love the poorly educated!” Go Trump!
Dr. Sanders could certainly debate Mr. Arpaio. The sheriff’s historically terrible management has already cost the people of Maricopa County more than $140 million in awards, settlements and legal fees. It’s not hard to debate a failure like that.
So……we get the crumbs…….we want the real deal.
Hillary didn’t even send Bill here
No loss. Why would anyone want to be around Bill Clinton the lecherous W.C. Fields look-alike?
Have you noticed that the best debaters always mock the personal appearance of the person under discussion? Stay classy! “I love the poorly educated!” Go Trump!
Tulsi Gabbard isn’t a Democrat! She’s like the Republicans who disrespect President Obama. When she was in the Hawaii State House of Representatives, she donated $1000 for Linda Lingle AND $2000 for Mike Gabbard when he was a Republican. I filed a complaint with the County Democratic Chair and he wouldn’t hear it even though I filed it on time and in compliance with the Democratic State By-Laws. He said: well, it’s her father after all. He never explained what family connection Lingle was to the Gabbard’s. He told me I wouldn’t win my race if I filed the complaint, I was running as a Democrat for State House; later the Democrat in charge of Candidates told me the party couldn’t help me. I told him that I thought that was quite harsh, when all I was doing was standing up for the Democratic Party, the party of choice!!!
Bernie isn’t a Democrat. He’s running as an Independent in Vermont. How does he think anyone can vote for him when he’s running at the same time as an Independent!!!!
The real message here is not how un-democratic Gabbard is, it’s how crooked the Dems in Hawaii are. Why are you still a democrat?
lol good one!
What choice is there? Certainly not joining the party of No. It is a real shame that the republican party no longer stands for anything except welfare for the rich. Has done the country so well in the past. (NOT!)
Democrats are far from perfect but the economy runs better when democrats are in charge. As for crookedness, well there is that in both parties. At least democrats don’t shut down traffic just because a mayor didn’t support them.
Ignoring the fact that “disrespect” is not a verb…. The thing that bothers me about Ms Gabbard is with her lifelong adherence to the Hare Krishna cult. (btw: this is not mainstream Hindu religion. Look it up) I am pretty liberal and accepting of other points of view but I can’t deal with blind obedience to a supposed god-head, former surfer, nut-job who demands that adherents walk around chanting “Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Hare, Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Hare, Hare.
What you refer to as “Hare Krishna” is Gaudiya Vaishnavism or Krishaism. It is one of the main branches of Hinduism (www.HinduHeritage.info). Obviously you are a Hinduphobe who believes that Hindus are to be feared and have no place in American politics. People like you belong on the mainland, not in the aloha state. http://www.HinduHeritage.info
I think you don’t realize that Simple’s problem is probably with Kurt Butler rather than with the Hindu religion. He is hardly the only one.
Obama endorsed Tulsi Gabbard for Congress and Obama campaigned for Bernie Sanders.
I’m sure you have a point but I’m buggered if I can see what it is. Could you explain in more depth?
Replying to kapoleitalkstory’s accusation that they are not Democrats
I did some more digging and I can’t find a donation from Tulsi Gabbard to Lingle. I did find the one to her dad, which is understandable. As much as I disagree with his views on Same sex marriage, he has been extremely good for Hawaii’s environment, agriculture, clean energy, etc.
Elections should not be party specific. It should go to the person who can best represent our democratic ideals. It should be about who does the best to represent Americans…not Washington, not SuperPacs, not big business. It is true that the average Joe has no say in who the nominees are but if that’s the case, we need to scrutinize who’s putting the nominees up for election. If it’s Trump vs Clinton, we may be forced to elect the lesser of two evils and that’s not a good choice either way. Trump is popular only because America is fed up with Washington politics and want an outsider but we need to be very careful of who that outsider is. Trump business has been bankrupt 4 times. Is that who we want to run the national economy? He IS a racist as evidenced by his non response to being notified that David Duke was endorsing him. His silence spoke volumes. Hilary, on the other hand, has serious trust issues. There is a simmering discontent in America that could lead to another world war, another civil war, or racial violence. The direction of our country currently is very disturbing.
i hear ya. person over party.
I love it when I read a comment like this! It gives me hope that at some time Americans will wakeup to the fact that they are being controlled by a myth. In reality, the two-party system is the same and the primary differences lay in who gets the tax revenues first…
Read comment below about Washington’s Farewell Address, 1787.
So….Trump used the IRS rules to safely get out of trouble and re-build. Our country has done it too and is currently in bankrupt status imo. We need someone with experience in getting out of debt. This makes Trump the only answer. I can spin just as well as you PB!
So you think that the United States should stiff our creditors and walk away from our debts like Mr. Trump has done over and over again? Most debt of the U.S. government is owed to U.S. citizens and corporations who purchase Treasury bonds. You think it’s a good idea for the U.S. to default? And of course, Mr. Trump did not use IRS “rules.” He used bankruptcy law. Your argument might carry just a bit more weight if it was based on actual facts.
Take a look at George Washington’s Farewell Address of 1787. About half way through, he warned America of the dangers of political parties. It just amazes me how prescient he was.
He, quite a few of our founders, and other notables of the era had a lot to say about the significance of the 2nd amendment as well. And their comments didn’t include any referrals to hunting.
You’re correct but that wasn’t the point to which I was speaking. I was mentioning something that is germane to the current presidential election. That is that the rise of political parties in the 19th century has been harmful to American Democracy.
Understood, and agree with you that timeless insight is still available from Washington and his contemporaries.
Yeah, thanks. I was amazed when I re-read his speech with the benefit of more years. I used to kind of dismiss Washington but he was a really bright guy, a child of the Enlightenment as were many of the architects of our nation.
The choice is always going to be the lesser of two evils. The perfect candidate is probably you and you are not running. So all candidates are going to have their plusses and minuses.
What’s the big deal on this woman coming here? Sanders will not win the White House. We don’t need a Socialist Commie Pinko running the show.
Oh puh-leeze!
it’s Democratic socialism not communism. “Socialist Commie Pinko” is a trumpism. Give up your social security and medicare if you don’t like democratic socialist programs.
I wish I could remember who said that FDR saved America from Communism by making America a Socialist nation. We really take our history for granted by forgetting and ignoring it. You made a very good point.
Not taking either side, but if you offered to return the bulk of my taxes, with interest, paid over a lifetime, I’d have to consider your offer carefully..
Okay, were you speaking to me or just speaking?
Relax. Poipoo suggests returning SS and medicare. My intent was to remind him of the alternative, both comments being merely conjecture.
Wow, Scooter, do you even realize how much of your life is circled in socialist programs?? http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/3/29/1078852/-75-Ways-Socialism-Has-Improved-America
“Jane” will blend in with the Winter-Time Midwest Tourists–with her marshmallow-white body and her cellulite-ridden okole…
Oh my goodness Fark. Please take a Xanax and then make yourself an omelette and a mimosa and read the poetry of Byron. You’ll actually feel better.
Perhaps we do need a “Socialist Commie Pinko”. What makes you think we don’t. You really think inequality for all is the way to go? Why?
Bernie may not win but he has succeeded in pushing sweet Hillary back to the left. Even republicans are beginning to move a bit to the left.
Someone needs a VACATION? Why you say?
Because Bernie’s Campaign here is ….futile! This is just a vacation folks….Move along!
Bernie Sanders is the ONLY hope our country has right now….as we are on a highway to heal.
OMG: I love that phrase “we are on a highway to heal.” I wish I had said it.
Ha!ha!ha! .Yeah Cellodad! I like that one too.
I will have to vote for Hillary as Bernie cannot win, a one-note impractical ideologue, and the Republicans have gone insane. Hillary is deeply flawed but who is not in this bizarre race?
This is just being silly. The primary is to pick the candidate you think is the best to lead the country. Bernie cannot win because there are too many people who are only concerned about voting for the candidate that wins. I prefer to vote for the candidate who is right. Sadly sweet Hillary is too much of a come lately. She was late in same sex marriage, late in prison reform, and late in calling the Iraq war a mess. Why vote for a come lately?
But in anser to your question, Bernie is the one candidate who is not flawed. Is he perfect? No, but at least he has generally been correct from the start.
Bernie may not win but I am not going to vote for a candidate that has shown poor judgment in the past and will likely do so again in the future.
