A wood-burning stove was the cause of a house fire early Friday morning in Honaunau, Hawaii island firefighters reported.
Firefighters were dispatched at 1:31 a.m. to a coffee farm lot about half a mile above Highway 11 on Rabbit Hill Road.
Firefighters found the concrete and wood structure fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. Nine fire units and 16 personnel were dispatched.
The single occupant was able to get out safely. He told fire personnel that the blaze was caused by a wood-burning stove that had tipped over.
Damage estimates were not available.
The fire was under control at 2:30 a.m. and extinguished at 5 a.m.
Call center open after damage to licensing office
Maui County has set up a call center for vehicle licensing questions after the Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing service center in Kahului was closed March 9 due to flooding and rain damage.
The public may call 270-7363 and dial “0” for the next available customer service representative, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Also, county officials remind the public that the hours of operation at the satellite DMVL offices have been extended to accommodate more customers. Hours of operation at the Pukalani, Kihei and Lahaina DMVL satellite offices are now from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Pukalani and Kihei satellite offices will also open for a half-day on Saturdays, starting today, from 8 a.m. to noon.
